AB Band Impresses at MICCA
The Acton-Boxborough band competed in the MICCA (Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association) marching band competition throughout October. After rigorous work at band camp, hours of rehearsal every Tuesday night throughout the fall, and performances at every football game, the band took the field to perform their show, comprising three pieces composed by Aaron Copland. The band participated in three MICCA events this year: a preview show in order to receive feedback and suggestions from judges, a district division performance, and the championship finals at Cawley Stadium in Lowell.
After great improvement based on comments and criticisms from judges at the preview and district shows, the AB Marching Colonials were awarded four out of five stars in each of the five categories (music, visual, color guard, percussion, and general effects) at the final state-wide competition, resulting in a silver metal. Band director Mark Hickey commented on their success, saying, “From the very beginning back in band camp, right through the moment the band took the field at the MICCA finals, the band members worked their tails off to achieve an outstanding level of performance. It is a beautiful thing to witness the band’s hard work paying off with such a great performance!”
The AB band had a very fun and successful marching season this year, perfecting the show and supporting the football team throughout the fall. In addition to the other performances that the band will take part in over the course of the school year, they are currently preparing for a trip to Orlando, Florida this December to march in the Citrus Bowl Parade. Mr. Hickey summed up his feelings on the season perfectly when he said, “I am so proud of the kids and their efforts…I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with these outstanding students. A big thanks to each band member for sharing their talents, efforts, and excellent attitudes!”
